Q: We would like to be able to tag, store, and search photographs in a central repository selected internal folks can access for publications, multimedia presentations, web pages, etc. We are talking about more than 500 photos but less than 5,000. We don't wish to sell any to parents, just access them internally.

A: Look into the php based Gallery program http://gallery.menalto.com/ I've run it on an Xserve with out any problems. It support IPTC caption data which lets you embed captions and other information inside the photo which is really handy.

A: For years, we have had the need to be able to archive and tag digital media, as well as then be able to easily search and retrieve specific media. I asked a former colleague to build us a Filemaker dBase to meet this need. We have now been using it for over two months. It has a very intuitive interface, has exceeded our anticipated needs, and has been extremely well received by our Marketing, Admission, and the Alumni/Development Offices.
